Khar  – The trouble maker: The Source of Danger and Demise

 (22nd Drekkana ,64th Navamsha)

Mr. C.S. Patel in his book “Navamsha in Astrology” has mentioned about KHAR Drekkana / Navamsha. (Refer Pg. 38).

The 22nd Drekkana from that of the Drekkana occupied by the ascendant is called Khar.

The 64th Navamsha from that of the Navamsha occupied by the Moon is called Khar Navamsha.

Classics such as Phal Deepika & Jatak Parijta advises using the 22nd and 64th Navamsha from all Bhavas for causes of danger and misfortune. Both these ominous stations have almost similar relevance; given a chart with proneness to develop illness.

The literal meaning of Khar is harsh, rough, harmful, sharp edged, cruel etc. Therefore, as described above, Khar and Kharesh are supposed to play an important role in disease.  As per sage Parashar, the Vimshopak strength of Shadvarga is 20 Rupas; 4 Rupas has been allotted to Drekkana(D3), stands third, followed by Rashi(D1) 6 and Navamsha(D9) 5 Rupas respectively.

The endeavor is to bring out the use and importance of 22nd Drekkana and 64th Navamsha in Medical Astrology, therefore, we must know the origin of these two in their respective Vargas .

What is Drekkana – Drekkana (D3) – It is basically an extension of third house. And the third house represents your Sanskars (psycho-social tendencies) (skill set/ thought process/ communication etc.) that make our attitude come from our previous lives. It also represents Purva Punya (7th to 9th). It is the third house that pushes us into the world outside for doing something of our own. Desires and dreams flourish here, it is the first among the Kaam Trikona. An Upchaya house that allows swift growth. It is the 8th from 8th; therefore, it also gives sudden / unexpected happenings or changes.

Unlike Sanskrit words, Drekkana is combination of two words: DRESH + KANNA. The `DRESH' signifies the source in Darshan, which transports apparent as well as hidden personality and nature (Swaroopa) of the native.

·         The word 'KANNA’ means Kona- The trine.

§  So, the calculation (based on trines) is recommended. Every sign is divided into three equal parts of 10⁰ each.

§  The first drekkana in every sign is from 0⁰ - 10⁰ falls in same sign, known as Karma Drekkana and extends the body part from the head to the mouth.

§  The second drekkana of every sign is from 10⁰ - 20⁰ falls in 5th sign from it, known as Bhoga Drekkana and extends the body parts from neck to the naval.

§  The third drekkana of every sign is from 20⁰ - 30⁰ falls in 9th sign from it, known as Nasha Drekkana and extends the body parts from the pelvis to the feet.

§  Therefore, there are 36 Drekkanas of 10⁰ each in Kal Purusha, represent 36 body parts

§  As mentioned above, the sign has been divided into three equal parts, known as Drekkana.

§  The counted from Aries sign, there are three cycle of drekkana in a horoscope in cyclic order.

The Sage Parashar stated that (Ch 7, SL 6):

§  The Devta of the First Drekkana is Narada.

§  The Devta of the Second Drekkana is Agastya.

§  The Devta of the Third Drekkana is Durvasa

There are 36 Drekkana in all and three cycles in the chart. Find below the calculation for fixing the Devta for individual Drekkana. These are symbolic representation of the Drekkanas.

·     §    The first drekkana is made up of Movable Sign and the Devta is Narada. Who is Narada, we all know the characteristics of Narada Rishi, He moves from one place to other, so the first drekkana represents Vaat.

Narada also represent the Atma, or the soul. The planets in the Drekkanas ruled by Narada would also denote the spiritual/karmic relations to the native's brothers, and may even signify the omni brothers (disciples of the same Guru). Narada was fond of travelling, also back biting

·      §   Similarly, the second Drekkana is made up of fixed signs and the devta is Agastya rishi. Who drank whole sea, the strong sense of determination and will to accept the challenges head-on, help others and live sedentary life style. So, the second Drekkana represents Kapha, which cannot move without the help of Vata. Therefore, second Drekkana represents primarily Kapha and secondarily Vaat.

Agastya Muni also associated with Manas, or the mind. And planets in the Drekkanas occupied by Agastya would signify the mental/psychological effects.

§  The third Drekkana is dual signs and the Devta is Durvasa rishi. The Durvasa rishi is well known for his anger. Therefore, third Drekkana represents Pitta as primary and secondary Vaat plus Kapha.

Durvasa Muni was famous for his hard work to control his brain, thus, signifying the Indriyas, or senses. Representing temperamental tendencies egoistic, orthodox traditions, impatient and ability to cause great harm if angry. Thus, planets in this Drekkanas governed by Rishi Durvasa would refer to the sensual/physical comfort or discomfort caused by the brothers and sister, friends and neighbors.

In this way all the significations become complete. So, we might also assume that the three Drekkanas of the signs may refer to the soul, the mind and the senses of the native. Such type of explanations not mentioned in any classics, and these are my practical observations, however, to be confirmed with further observations.

This type of division of the Varga gives better results particularly in Medical Astrology than the most approved traditional method of divisions.

22nd Drekkana –It is one of the Chiddra planet and gives malefic results. According to BPHS, the nature of the 22nd Drekkana indicates the source/ manner of death of the native. Otherwise, when Longevity is not conceded, according to Prarabdh, it signifies the physical discomfort and health matters.

Since it is calculated from Lagna, therefore, it brings harm of physical nature. Likewise, we should calculate 22nd Drekkana from Moon also to indicate the Mental Agony. Presence of natural malefices in 22nd drekkana (in D1), reduces the strength of the chart up to great extent. Dasha and transit of Kharesh is horrendous and can give death like situations.

§  When the Lagna falls in the 1st Drekkana, the 8th lord (of D1) would be the 22nd Drekkana Lord.

§  When the Lagna falls in the 2nd Drekkana, the 12th lord (of D1) is the 22nd Drekkana lord.

§  When the Lagna falls in the 3rd Drekkana, the 4th lord (of D1) would be the 22nd Drekkana lord.

Sarpa Drekkana   Sarpa Drekkana can mean danger from poisonous reptiles that could be life threatening.

              i.        The 2nd & 3rd of Cancer

             ii.        The 1st & 2nd of Scorpio

            iii.        The 3rd of Pisces.

           iv.        The 2nd of Taurus

Each Drekkana consists of 4 Dwadasamsha:

·         1st is ruled by Ganesh

·         2nd is ruled by Ashwini Kumar

·         3rd is ruled by Yama &

·         4th is ruled by Ahi or Serpent or Sarpa

Points further to delineate

            Nature of Native-

v  Every Drekkana ranges over 10 degrees and is further divided into 3⁰20′ each.

                      i.        The First Navamsha is ruled by the Gods (Devgan)

ii.        The Second Navamsha is ruled by Humans (Manushya gana)

iii.        The Third Navamsha is ruled by Demons (Rakshasa gana)

v  The above 3 also represent the 3 Gunas.

                      i.        Dev is Sattvic.

                     ii.        Manushya is Rajasic.

                    iii.        Rakshasa is Tamasic.

v  Hence the Lagna, Lagna Lord and Moon of the D1 and their placement in D3 with the Guna of Navamsha indicate the physical trend and mental disposition of the native.

v  Khara (& Dushan) was a ferocious warrior in the army of Ravana. He fought with Ram (during exile). Thus, this shows our inner turmoil.

v  The placement of Kharesh from Lagna in D3 chart shows our inner fight.

v  Its placement in 6th house indicates the struggle related to disease, debt, or enemy.

v  Drekkana lord if placed in Trik houses in D1 with some malefic, the native would be sadistic and having suicidal tendencies. Further to add, if malefic influence is more then in that case the person suffers death or serious injury. However, if D3 lord is associated or aspected by benefices, the results would get modified as per the benevolence of planet/s.

v  A planet in its own Drekkana confers merits.

v  If the first house of Drekkana aspected by its lord or by benefice planets, it increases good qualities in the native. Correspondingly, association or aspect of malefic will increase bad tendencies.

v  If Drekkana lord is in its own sign in D3 chart and as well as in D1 chart, the native belongs to a martial family & will be inclined to pursue such professions, however, the native will be full of valour and courage.

v  If Drekkana lord is placed in Kendra houses (1,4,7,10) or exalted, either in D3 or in D1, the elevation is for sure .

v  If D3 lord happens to be the Sun or Mars and posited in the 8th house in D1 chart, the native is prone to receive electric shocks.

v  Planets having the same Drekkana (movable) as D3 Lagna shall afflict the portion above the neck.

v  Planets in the second (fixed) Drekkana from Lagna afflict the trunk and

v  In the third type, they afflict the Lower portion of the body.

v  Let us presume, if the ascendant is in a movable Drekkana, and all planets in movable Drekkana, influences the head (above the trunk and planet in common Drekkana influence the Lower portion of the body.

v  The dispositor of a planet in D3, if aspected by that very planet in D1, it would be termed as auspicious dasha for the dispositor.
